Perth to Rhodes Flights: Best Routes and Smart Stopover Picks
There's no direct Perth–Rhodes flight, and there won't be one soon. Here's how to route it smartly, which stopover to pick, and when to book.

The Honest Truth: There's No Direct Flight, and There Won't Be
Perth to Rhodes is roughly 13,000 km as the crow flies, and no airline flies it nonstop — not even close. You're looking at a minimum of one stopover, more realistically two, and a total door-to-door travel time of 24 to 30 hours depending on how your connections line up. If you've searched Google Flights and gotten a blank stare, that's why: this route only exists as a combination of two or three separate flights, usually booked as one ticket through a Gulf or Turkish hub.
The good news is that Perth Airport's Terminal 1 has genuinely strong long-haul options west, which makes the first leg of this journey easier than it looks. The trick is picking the right hub for the middle leg and getting yourself onto Rhodes' Diagoras International Airport (RHO) without burning an extra day.
Best Routing Options From Perth
There are four realistic ways to get from Perth to Rhodes, and they differ a lot in cost, comfort, and total flying time.
- Emirates via Dubai — Perth–Dubai is a nonstop Emirates service, around 11 hours, several times a week from Terminal 1. From Dubai International (DXB), Emirates and codeshare partners connect to Athens in about 4 hours 40 minutes, then you pick up a domestic hop to Rhodes. Qantas Frequent Flyer members can often credit points on this routing thanks to the Qantas–Emirates partnership.
- Qatar Airways via Doha — Perth–Doha runs nonstop on Qatar's 787 Dreamliner, roughly 11.5 hours, and was one of the airline's flagship ultra-long-haul routes when it launched. Doha to Athens adds about 5 hours. This is usually the most competitively priced of the Gulf options.
- Etihad via Abu Dhabi — Etihad resumed nonstop Perth–Abu Dhabi service in June 2023 after a pandemic-era gap, at around 11 hours 20 minutes. From Abu Dhabi, connections to Athens run through Etihad's codeshare network.
- Malaysia Airlines + Turkish Airlines via Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul — This one's less obvious but worth knowing. Malaysia Airlines flies Perth–Kuala Lumpur nonstop in about 5 hours, and Turkish Airlines runs Kuala Lumpur–Istanbul nonstop in around 12 hours. From Istanbul, Turkish Airlines operates a seasonal direct flight to Rhodes (April through October), cutting out the Athens leg entirely.
One caveat worth flagging up front: the Kuala Lumpur–Istanbul–Rhodes combination only works in the warmer months. Outside the April–October window, Turkish Airlines drops the Istanbul–Rhodes route, and you're back to connecting through Athens no matter which hub you choose.

Turning the Stopover Into Part of the Trip
Given you're already committing to a long journey, a planned stopover beats a rushed connection almost every time.
- Dubai stopover — Emirates' stopover program lets you book 2–4 nights in Dubai at discounted hotel rates as part of your fare, with free airport transfers included on some tiers. Even a 24-hour layover gets you time for the Dubai Mall and a sunset look at the Burj Khalifa from Downtown Dubai.
- Doha stopover — Qatar Airways offers a similar deal, and Hamad International Airport's transit hotel is genuinely useful if you're stuck there for 6+ hours overnight rather than doing a full city stopover.
- Abu Dhabi stopover — Etihad's stopover packages include free or discounted nights at partner hotels, and it's an easy way to see Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque without adding much extra flying.
- Istanbul stopover — Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul program offers free guided tours for transit passengers with layovers of 6–24 hours, covering Sultanahmet Square and the Hagia Sophia. It's one of the better free perks in commercial aviation right now.
The tradeoff: every extra night you add to a stopover pushes your total trip timeline out, and if you're travelling during Greek school holidays or European summer (mid-July through late August), hotel rates in Dubai and Istanbul climb too. If your primary goal is just getting to Rhodes, a 3–5 hour layover with a quick coffee and leg-stretch is honestly all you need.
The Final Leg: Athens (or Istanbul) to Rhodes
Once you land at Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos, ATH), you're not done — Rhodes is a separate domestic hop.
- Aegean Airlines runs multiple daily flights from Athens to Rhodes, with a flight time of around 50 minutes. One-way fares typically sit in the $50–$120 range depending on how far ahead you book.
- Sky Express, Greece's other major domestic carrier, also flies the Athens–Rhodes route and is sometimes a few dollars cheaper, though its schedule is thinner outside peak season.
- The ferry alternative: Blue Star Ferries sails overnight from Piraeus port (Athens' harbour) to Rhodes, taking roughly 15–18 hours. It's slower, but if you're planning to island-hop through the Cyclades or Dodecanese anyway, it lets you break up the trip with a stop in Naxos or Kos rather than flying over them.
If you've routed through Istanbul instead, the seasonal Turkish Airlines flight direct to Rhodes takes about 1 hour 50 minutes and skips Athens altogether — genuinely the shortest way to finish this journey if your dates fall between April and October.

One more caveat: if you book the Athens–Rhodes leg as a separate ticket rather than through your original airline, you'll need to collect and re-check your luggage in Athens, and you lose any protection if your inbound long-haul flight is delayed and you miss the connection. Booking everything as one itinerary through your travel agent or the airline's own site costs a little more but removes that risk entirely.
When to Fly for the Best Fares and Weather
Rhodes has a genuinely brutal peak season, and it affects both flight prices and what your trip will actually feel like on the ground.
- Shoulder season (April–June, September–October): This is the sweet spot. Return economy fares on the Gulf-carrier routings typically run in the $1,300–$1,900 range, the Aegean Sea is warm enough to swim in by late May, and Rhodes Old Town isn't shoulder-to-shoulder with cruise ship day-trippers.
- Peak summer (July–August): Fares regularly climb past $2,200 return, hotel prices in Rhodes Town double, and daytime temperatures routinely hit 35°C. If you're set on these dates, book flights at least 4–5 months ahead.
- Winter (November–March): Fares drop, but so does the island's tourism infrastructure — many hotels and restaurants outside Rhodes Town close entirely, and Aegean's domestic schedule to Rhodes thins out.
Practical Booking Tips
A few things that'll save you money and stress before you commit to a routing:
- Book the long-haul and domestic legs together when possible. Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad all let you add the Athens–Rhodes hop to the same booking, which protects your connection if the first flight runs late.
- Check visa requirements early. Australian passport holders don't need a visa for stays under 90 days in Greece, but the EU's new ETIAS entry system is expected to roll out through 2025 — it's a short online form and a small fee, not a full visa, but budget a few minutes for it before departure.
- Pack for two climates. You might land in Dubai or Doha at 40°C and step off in Rhodes at a breezy 24°C in shoulder season — layer accordingly rather than checking a suitcase built for one destination.
- Watch baggage allowances on the domestic leg. Aegean Airlines' economy fares often include less checked luggage than your long-haul carrier — 15–20kg is typical versus 30kg on Emirates or Qatar Airways — so weigh your bags before you leave Perth.
- Set a fare alert rather than booking on the first search. Fares on this route swing meaningfully week to week; a Tuesday afternoon search often turns up different pricing than a Friday evening one.
Next Step
Set a Google Flights price alert for PER→RHO (it'll show you the combined itineraries even without a direct route), with flexible dates ±5 days, aimed at late April or mid-September. Compare the Qatar Airways-via-Doha and Emirates-via-Dubai options side by side before you book, since the fare gap between them regularly runs $150–$300 depending on the week.
